This is why I'm glad I cancelled my satellite TV!
I remember going out during snow storms with a broom to try to clear the dish and the transponder. No more! Of course, the internet connection could drop, but I have over 600 DVDs and Bluerays, plus more on my iMac. And there's always books.

As usual, clicken to embiggen.
We've got a pretty big storm hitting us, dumping a consistent inch or more per hour since midnight or so last night.
A couple more under the cut.

Athena's companion is always patient and vigilant, even if it is a bit nippy out.
I went out to shovel off the porch, in preparation to take at least some of the trash out (it was 18f outside), and when I saw the had on the owl and the buildup on the rails I came back in and had Russet fetch my Lumix. It was just too cool not to get a photo.

Nothing much to say on this one, I just really liked the patterns of how the plethora of branches had caught snow, and it was kinda neat how the camera's somewhat high shutter caught the snow falling in front of it all.

I mean. It's cold here, this week. I have to wear shoes and socks in the house to be comfortable. I have to wear long sleeves in the office. I have to use two blankets at night. I'm almost tempted to close the skylight.

Aaah, poor woobie! Sounds like you suffer so! ;-) It was quite a change, moving here from Phoenix. I've now experienced -20f to over 120f, which is something. And in the same year! The thing that vexes me is that most of NM is not inexpensive in the larger cities. Car insurance is comparable to Phoenix, so is housing. The only thing that I've found that cost less was car registration, and that is not a major expenditure. I'm sure there are places with truly low costs of living, but I haven't seen them. And this is something that constantly ticks me off: middle-class wages have been stagnant for over 30 years, cost of living has not been. But that's the subject of another rant.
re: weather
Some have said that there's no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing. I think they lived in Scandinavia.
ETA: It's not that weather is unpleasant, it's that some of it makes extra work. Or y'know kills people.
Re: weather
Or gets your car stuck in snow. I went out for pizza tonight, haven't gotten my snow tires mounted yet, and there was a nice big ol' pickup stuck in my way home. I had to back down, reverse into another road, and go back to another road that let me take an alternative way back to my street. I didn't quite make it up that road and briefly got stuck, but was able to muster enough energy to get my card sliding back downhill, turned around, and got enough speed up to get onto my street, and then it was easy getting home. Ky previous car, an all-wheel drive Toyota Matrix (about 5" of ground clearance) I got stuck everywhere. My Subaru with snow tires is almost unstickable. But this winter has been nothing - until Thursday after midnight! I might be able to get my tires put on tomorrow, not sure yet. I beat a path to the shed where my tires are, tomorrow I might shovel out the door area and get them loaded up and down to Alamogordo. At least I got a set of steel rims with them, so a swap takes all of 15 minutes.

I may have to take an extended weekend trip up north again next month if I want to get out on my cross country skis or snowshoes at all this winter (sigh).
As for the dish thing, never subscribed myself. Got rid of cable when I moved to the current house a little over 13 years ago. I've had an antenna since. It serves its purpose. I don't watch much TV to begin with other than background noise when one of the cats wants lap time.

It's also been a weird winter down here. Normally I get my snow tired mounted the week after Thanksgiving, but there was no indication of snow. Last year I could have gone with my all-weathers all winter without a problem. This year I didn't get it done, and our snow fall was pitiful - until Boxing Day. Then all this happened. Granted, there was no way to get out yesterday to get my tires put on: they closed the highway up the mountain! Thursday we went to El Paso and saw Aquaman (and quite liked it), the heavy downfall didn't hit until after midnight.
Prior to this storm we'd get a couple of inches, then it'd warm up and/or rain and it would all go away. Then it would snow again, rinse, repeat. Nothing would persist. Until now. THIS will really help the aquifers and trees. I'll get my tires put on next Wednesday or Thursday: if it'll dump like this once, good chance if it happening again. I'm going to post another pic of the satellite dish - it's amazing what it looks like this morning!
The amount of TV that we watch varies. We watch a lot of movies, but it can go several days without the TV being turned on. I tend to watch movies when my wife is working, which may or may not be scrounged up from various video on demand - I finally got to see Robot and Frank and really enjoyed it, but definite niche movie.

That's the problem with the border wall. I cannot in good faith support a wall without a moat.

And at that point you can add a jousting arena, feasting hall, performance stages and shops. It could actually turn a pretty profit, not to mention employing historians and performers (i.e. English majors).

I assume you're talking about that NE corner near the mountains? Yeah, I bet they sometimes get hammered.
In Cloudcroft, north of the highway is considered the 'poor' side of town and obviously it's small enough that when it snows like this, the entire town gets hit. The funny thing is, if you live on the north side and have an eastern exposure, you get good melt, and today's been sunny and fortunately no new snow. The south side, the allegedly 'rich' side, has so many thick pockets of trees that they get very poor sun exposure and thus very little melt and have icy snow all winter long. Teach them to be snobs! ;-)
