Wow, cancer on your salivary gland?!

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Movie critic Roger Ebert was in serious condition at a Chicago hospital on Sunday following an emergency operation to repair complications from an earlier cancer surgery, the Chicago Sun-Times said on its Web site.

Ebert, 64, is a film critic for the Sun-Times newspaper and co-host of television's "Ebert & Roeper," a movie review show.

Richard Roeper, co-host of the TV show, said in the story that Ebert's vital signs appeared to be good after the operation.

On June 16, Ebert, a Pulitzer Prize winner, had surgery to remove a cancerous growth on his salivary gland. About 8 p.m. on Saturday, a blood vessel burst near the site of the operation, the Web site said.

Previously, Ebert has had four cancer surgeries, including two on his salivary gland in 2003, the story said.

Hayao Miyazaki 1/5/41-7/1/06
Hello. It's been awhile since I wrote something here. But this seemed to call for it. Sorry it's so short.

With great sadness I learned that on July 1, Hayao Miyazaki died of a stroke. He was the creator of such masterworks as 'My Neighbor, Totoro', 'Castle Calliostro', 'Spirited Away', and 'Nausica'.

As my friend Doug Rice put it, his death brings to an end the great age of 2-D (or "flat") animation.

He was one of the few moviemakers that I would have cheerfully sold the Girl Genius rights to and been secure in the knowledge that he would have produced a superior film, guaranteed.

Domo Arigato, Miyazaki-sensai

This is unconfirmed, the standard news sources are not yet reporting this. I'm sure it will be confirmed or disproved in the next few days.

Please read my resume before sending me any email. If it says "PLEASE NOTE -- I WILL NOT RESPOND TO EMAILS SOLICITING POSITIONS THAT ARE NOT IN THE SOUTHEAST NEW MEXICO OR EL PASO, TX AREAS", then don't send me positions in Pennsylvania or California. I thought the "Not Willing To Relocate" sort of said it all. If the location is in the subject, your email will be deleted without being opened. If it is in the body, it will be deleted without a reply.

Also please note that if you have to include words in your email to elude Bayesian spam filters, it's not too likely that I'll bother clicking on your web site. I don't know if you're trying to scam information for identity theft or multi-level marketing or what, but I'm not not going to go to your site.

And finally, if the domain on the email does not match the domain on the web site that you want me to go to, I ain't gonna go. If your office is legitimate, then you need to spend $50 a year and have your hosting provider set you up with an email system for your domain. Likewise, if you're a recruiter and your initial contact email comes from Yahoo, Gmail, or Hotmail, double-minus not good and no visit for you!

Again, from Phil Foglio's blog:

Hayao Miyazaki Is Alive and Well After All!
Normally I hate being wrong, and I hate admitting it even more. However in this case, I will do so cheerfully.

My friend, who informed me that Mr. Miyazaki had passed away, wrote to me this morning to tell me that he had been mistaken, and that Miyazaki was alive and well.

He is normally a good source of information, because he has a lot of contacts in Japan, and follows animation news and events there very closely. I have no idea what caused him to believe that Miyazaki had died in the first place, I'm just damn glad he's incorrect.

Sorry for throwing a scare into everyone, and I promise to smack my friend around the room a few times. Now I'm going to go watch 'Spirited Away'.
