Wow. Now my question is: is that reflective of the audience, or Hollywood's unwillingness to take risk, or how much of both?

Here's the list:
10. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
9. Venom: The Last Dance
8. Kung Fu Panda 4
7. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
6. Wicked
5. Dune: Part Two
4. Moana 2
3. Despicable Me 4
2. Deadpool & Wolverine
1. Inside Out 2

Interestingly, I've only seen four of these: Dune, Despicable Me, Deadpool/Wolvie, and Inside Out. I plan on seeing KFP4 and I expect we'll see Moana while it's in the theaters. My interest in owning any of these is very, very low. What I want is the B&W version of Godzilla Zero! Now that film I really enjoyed!

Coming Soon To A Theater Near You (well, February)

There's also a film called Coyote vs Acme in the can but unreleased, if this does well, we might see the other.

I am SOOO looking forward to this! Of course, I'm sick, so maybe next weekend.

And here's a short article about the making of Krampus:

Alamo suffered outages at four theaters, two in the NYC area, plus Denver and San Francisco They blamed Sony projectors, which is curious as Sony exited the movie theater projector business in 2020: you'd think that Alamo would have phased them out and replaced them since they would have represented a severe service liability if they were to break.

At any rate, the problem seemed to be computer security/encryption certificates tied to the movies they were showing. Not all movies were affected. The distributor was scrambling to recreate certificates with longer expiration dates and - however they go about it - 'reprint' and re-issue the movies to the theaters.

The movies are shipped as encrypted files, then the certificates are needed to decrypt them. The certificate ties into the projector so the file decrypts as it is being played. DVDs and Bluray players do the same things, that's why you sometimes need to do an update to your Bluray player to play the latest titles: certificates have been updated and your old certs won't decrypt the newest stuff.

Apparently all was well on New Year's Day.

Granted, they had good reason: Majors was convicted earlier today of assaulting a woman in a car. There are allegations of many other assaults, and there has been a hue and cry to fire him for many months as these allegations have started surfacing. One movie that he starred in - not a Marvel movie - was pulled from release because of this.

This bodes ill for the MCU. It's rough on a movie franchise to fire the next Big Bad when your big tent pole movie for 2026 was Avengers: Kang Dynasty. Thus far, Kang has only appeared in one movie: Ant Man and Wasp: Quantumania (which sucked, IMO) and in both seasons of the Loki series on Disney+. This Rolling Stone article lays out some possible ways to get around the firing of Majors.

The obvious solution is finding another actor, of which there are several options. People have been re-cast in movie series on a regular basis, this is totally doable.

For me, personally, I'd like to see them either dump or postpone the Kang series. The last Ant Man movie was not good, and it wasn't because of Majors: it was because they lost the path of Ant Man, a wise-cracking Average Joe. The great humor that was in the first two movies was completely gone and it just wasn't worth it for me. The thing that made the MCU work for me was the build-up to Thanos: you had all of these individual heroes eventually coming together, and a Big Bad emerges that took their combined strengths to defeat. Now the band is broken up, Cap and Tony are dead (for the time being), some new people are being introduced, let's get some individual movies out and rebuild the team rather than throwing another huge Big Bad on the screen!

AND ANOTHER THING! Stop referencing stuff from the Disney+ streaming service in the movies! There should be a firewall between those sides! That really ticks me off. AND GET OFF MY LAWN!

YAY! *insert Happy Kermit Flail*

From the article, "In 2024, though, you'll get the chance to see those animated films on the big screen. Soul will get a theatrical release on January 12, Turning Red will hit cinemas on February 9 and Luca will emerge on a silver screen near you on March 22."

LOVED Turning Red, really enjoyed Soul at a different level. Luca was fun. Will definitely try and catch all three.

To me, this looks like an awesome movie with lots of humor and action. To them, or their bots, it is 'Disney forcing their woke feminist crap on us' and dishonoring the Marvel tradition, or some shit like that.

Just before it left our local theater, I saw the new Ant Man/Wasp Quadraphenia, or whatever it was called, and was bitterly disappointed because the two previous Ant Man movies were so funny! This looks like one I can look forward to lots of laughs in. The first Captain Marvel movie - four years ago! - was excellent, can't wait to re-watch it to refresh the character in my mind.

Spider-Noir first appeared in print in 2009 in the Noir Marvel universe. A man, not Peter Parker, in 1930s depression New York City, is bitten by a spider and starts seeing visions of an ancient Spider God.

Spider-Noir was seen somewhat recently in the animated movie, Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse, which I quite liked. This should be interesting. That movie won an Academy Award for best animation, two sequels are in production, the first to be released in June of this year.

The article doesn't say who is going to voice Spidey. I hope it's the same guy from the Spider-Verse movies.

No information except that it's being made. A joint production of Aardman Animation, Netflix, and the BBC.

I'm curious who will voice Wallace since the actor, Peter Sallis, passed away in '17.

Still, something to really look forward to! Makes me want to see Shaun the Sheep again.

Five minutes of footage from over 56 hours worth that he's working with! It's not a trailer or a sneak peak, just a montage of cool stuff of the Fab Four working/clowning around in the studio and on the roof top of the famous Abbey Road performance.

Alan Parsons received his first engineering credit on Abbey Road, I wonder if he'll be visible in the footage?

He's in the final edit and about half-way through: since he's based in New Zealand, and NZ has dealt with the pandemic, he's back to work.

I have no evidence for this, but I'm guessing that he did a full restoration process on his footage like he did for his World War I documentary to bring it up to modern hi-def standards, so it should look and sound quite stunning when it releases in August '21.

Regardless, I'm quite looking forward to this and expect it'll end up in my collection.

DOJ trashed the Paramount ruling that prevented studios from owning theater chains.

70 years ago, there were 8 movie studios that produced a vast majority of movies seen. Now Disney by itself produces 40% of the box office gross. Obviously things are different in the Year of the Plague, but you get my point. Seventy years ago, a consent decree was entered in to by Paramount and the other studios that they would divest themselves from the theaters they owned because they were complete vertical monopolies. And where they weren't owning the theater, they were forcing others to buy complete package bundles: a movie, plus other movies, plus short features - where all the theater wanted was the first movie.

Disney is already doing this, screwing over boutique art houses by locking up movies like The Fly and The Day The Earth Stood Still, doing their '20 years in the vault' shit. There's no reason to do it, it just makes it more valuable when they start a restore in 15 years and re-release it in 20. But it completely screws over art houses who rely on such films for festivals.

It really hurts movie lovers like me and my friends. I was the president of a club called the Phoenix Fantasy Film Society for over 30 years. There was absolutely no benefit to the theaters for this consent decree to be cancelled by DOJ, the only benefit is to people like Disney that allows them to grow ever more larger and rapacious.

Meanwhile, I have my doubts that my local theater chain will survive the pandemic. They have three large complexes, one near me and two in Las Cruces. They're not a great chain and exist only in New Mexico and frankly, they're kinda stupid about their schedule timing and their movie selection. BUT THEY'RE ALL I HAVE. Let's face it, how can you safely see a movie? The basic dynamics can sort of be done safely - IF YOU WEAR A MASK ALL THE TIME. The problem is a vast amount of theater profit is driven by concessions, and you can't wear a mask and munch strangely-flavored popcorn and suck down high-fructose corn syrup. So their profit margins are going to be really bad. And it's not a huge amount of money to set up a pretty decent home theater these days and relive the glories of movies past at home with much better concessions for a lot less, and non-sticky floors! (I hope!)

And if our local theater chain dies, I can't see Disney swooping in. Maybe Cinemark will expand up from El Paso, but everyone is hurting. Disney itself is down over $5,000,000,000 last quarter: some people theorizing they could get bought up by Amazon, Alphabet, or Apple! That would be an interesting turn of the mouse!

I am really looking forward to this, I loved The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, in fact I'm wearing a sweatshirt for the latter right now. This looks like a very fun film, much in the style of Grand Budapest.

Got some things to vent about.

But some non-spoilery things first.

It was a better ending to a nine-movie slog than I expected, but at the same time it kinda broke parts of the previous two movies of the final trilogy. Which, to me, means that they desperately needed someone like Joss overseeing the entire final three movies to maintain the story over the entire arc. I found that very disappointing. I won't say George could've done better: he proved that he couldn't with eps 1-3, I think they gave JJ too much leash.

On to the parts that disappointed me.

It had a horrible opening weekend, earning just $6mil on a $100mil cost, so it's promising to be a giant money suck. I'm not surprised, the trailers look horrible. So they're slipstreaming an update: theaters with satellite can download a new version of the movie right now, those without will receive new hard drives soon.

Wow. This has never been done before. Sure, they've done updates for the home release, that's not uncommon. But while it's still in the theaters? That's a lot of effort and I don't think it'll help.

I read a review on Buzzfeed, and they were brutal. But so were so many other reviewers that Rotten Tomatoes has given it a 16% score! It takes a lot to earn that low of a score. The cast is amazing, has buckets of talent, but the look is appalling.

I just don't think I can bring myself to see this, I find the look too disturbing.

Such relief. I was on tenterhooks waiting for them to reconcile. I couldn't sleep. My blood pressure was through the roof.

Oh, wait. None of that was true.

They reconciled to make another bajillion dollars. Spidey will do another two Spider-Man movies and appear in at least one more MCU title, most likely an Avengers movie. Next Spidey movie in the Homecoming series will be July 2021.

When I posted about the breakup originally on August 21, I said "I expect there will be a reconciliation. After all, Spider-Man drifted in and out of the Avengers over the years. And there's just too much money for both Sony and The Giant Rat for them not to reach a mutually satisfying agreement."

HOW COULD I HAVE BEEN SO WRONG! /s

First, a remake of The Princess Bride is not confirmed. Sony CEO was quoted as saying that "people were interested" in remaking it. The howl of outrage on Twitter and across the internet was inconceivable. And I think if the original author, William Goldman, were still alive we'd be hearing even more.

So hopefully it will remain a rumor and not be remade in my lifetime! While I don't consider it the "perfect" movie, it's a damn good movie, and no, it should not be remade. But as Hollywood hates taking chances with movies, who knows.

Remaking Battlestar Galactica is definite. This time it's NBC/Universal, and they're making it for their new streaming service, Peacock, just like CBS did for their streaming channel with the new Star Trek series. Myself, I'm very much indifferent about this as I didn't succeed in finishing the Edward James Olmos remake: it was a series that seemed as if you missed one episode, you were kinda screwed. And we didn't have a DVR at the time.

This is technically not a remake, as they are "exploring other stories within the mythos" of the Galactica universe. Could be interesting, but I'm not interested in signing up for another streaming service. If NBC becomes available through Hulu, then we'll see.

One interesting thing about this is it's being developed - currently - by Sam Esmail, the creator of Mr. Robot. He's definitely a hot property right now and could do a heck of a job. We shall see what happens. Of course many recent movie projects, including Star Wars, have had creators shuffled around before they've come to fruition, so no guarantee he'll stay with the project.

I'm sure there's more than enough fans dancing in the streets over this one, so more power to 'em.

"Definitely not a good time to be a Nazi!"

Starring Taika Waititi as a boy's imaginary friend - Adolph Hitler.

Waititi is the maker of such amazing films as What We Do In The Shadows, In Search of the Wilderpeople, and a little film called Thor: Ragnarok, and apparently he's also involved in the Disney+ production of The Mandalorian. Also appearing in this film are Scarlett Johansen as the boy's mother, Sam Rockwell, and Rebel Wilson.

Opens mid-October.

Disney and Sony can't come to terms over profit-sharing over Spider-Man movies, which means no more Tom Holland Spidey within the MCU realm. Which is sad. Sony made five Spidey movies which, for me, sucked. I saw a couple, was not impressed, and stopped watching them - but I freely admit I was never a big Spider-Man fan. I loved the latest Sony: Into The Multiverse, and Sony made a lot of bucks with it. I also loved Tom's appearances in the MCU. And Tom is under contract for two more Spidey films, but they won't be able to use any of the MCU characters in it, which will be interesting.

It's all about the Benjamins: Disney wanted a 50/50 split, which is patently ridiculous. They were getting 5% of first day dollars, which is absolutely huge, plus lots of the merchandising, and probably the streaming rights. And they want 50/50? Ridiculous. Now Ars has an update to their story about Feige not being available due to his increased corporate duties. While that may be true, sounds a little like providing cover.

I expect there will be a reconciliation. After all, Spider-Man drifted in and out of the Avengers over the years. And there's just too much money for both Sony and The Giant Rat for them not to reach a mutually satisfying agreement.

The King's Man, featuring Lawrence of Arabia, Rasputin, and Mata Hari. Starring, among others, Ralph Riennes, Liam Niesson, and Stanley Tucci. Apparently they filmed the 4th Kingsman movie back to back with this one, so I expect we may see it late 2020 or early '21.

I quite enjoyed the first two, broadly-speaking. There were parts I did not like, but I thought they were fun takes on the spy genre. This one looks quite interesting for a WW I spy film.
