Oh, I love irony!

The PAC is now called Haley Voters For Harris, and after Miss Nik threw her support to Trump at the convention, they decided to throw their support - and their $400,000 - to Kamala!

Little Miss Nik didn't like this and sent them a cease and desist, saying they couldn't use her name, likeness, etc. So the people running the PAC, in their best Eric Cartman imitation, replied with (paraphrasing) "I can do what I want!" Nikki is a public figure, which loses her a lot of copyright protection, greatly weakening C&D threats.

From the article: “Kamala Harris and I are total opposites on every issue,” Haley wrote in a statement denouncing the group. “Any attempt to use my name to support her or her agenda is deceptive and wrong.” To which the group responded "“Our rights to engage with voters and encourage them to vote for Vice President Harris—who in our view is the clear better choice for the country—will not be suppressed,” and instantly gained another 3,000 followers!

I find this tremendously amusing.

In 2021, a certain felon's son in law received $2,000,000,000 from the Saudi Public Investment Fund. From the article, "A panel that screens investments for the Saudi sovereign wealth fund warned against investing with Kushner, given his inexperience in finance, but the full board, led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, overruled the panel, The New York Times reported in 2022."

The investigation is being led by perhaps my favorite Senator, Ron Wyden (D) of Oregon. Again, from the article: "A panel that screens investments for the Saudi sovereign wealth fund warned against investing with Kushner, given his inexperience in finance, but the full board, led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, overruled the panel, The New York Times reported in 2022.

...

“The Saudi PIF’s decision to invest $2 billion in Affinity so soon after Kushner’s departure from the Trump White House raises concerns that the investment was a reward for official actions Kushner took to benefit the Saudi government, including preventing accountability for the Saudi government ordering the brutal murder of journalist and American citizen Jamal Khashoggi,” Wyden wrote.

Wyden’s letter asked Affinity Partners for details about its seeding investments, the investments made by the firm, as well as the fees it has received, and the amount Kushner has been paid. The company did not immediately respond to requests for comment made through its website.

Wyden’s letter represents an escalation of Democratic scrutiny of Kushner’s business activities, which have been controversial from the start. Even House Oversight Committee chair James Comer (R-Ky.), an aggressive defender of Donald Trump, said last year that he thought Kushner “crossed the line of ethics” with his Saudi deal.

Comer has overseen Republicans’ impeachment inquiry against Joe Biden, which has largely focused on business deals by the president’s son. Republicans have said he improperly traded on his father’s former position as vice president during the Obama administration."

The bit about 'business practices being controversial from the start' is partly in reference to Jared's dad going to prison for said practices, and getting pardoned by Trump. Of course, a presidential pardon doesn't erase a conviction, just gets your butt out of the pokey. I have little reason to believe that said business practices have greatly changed, especially considering how his F-I-L's haven't: he still owes the City of El Paso for protective services during the 2020 campaign, possibly from the 2016 campaign!

It's amusing that Comer would say Kushner 'crossed the line' with him so rabidly pursuing Biden and coming up with absolutely nothing after all this time. The Dems in the House can't do anything since they're not the majority party there, but Wyden can in the Senate!

Anyone want to lay some odds that a certain felon is going to start squawking about his S-I-L being persecuted by those Crooked Dems?

Man, I'd love it if they found enough evidence that a prosecution became viable and Jared found himself a felon. I don't think you can hold a securities license with that conviction, not sure about a real estate license.

Now, guaranteed he's going to appeal. After all, in America, you're innocent until proven broke. (Robert Blake quote)

He pulled a page from Trump's playbook, and like his mastermentor, defamed the women in the exact same way earlier on the court steps after having been found guilty of defamation. The jury deliberated for two days before handing down the amount of damages.

From the article: "The jury found Giuliani owes Wandrea ArShaye “Shaye” Moss and her mother Ruby Freeman $16,998,000 and $16,171,000, respectively, for defamation; $20 million a piece for emotional distress; and $75 million total in punitive damages. The payouts total over $148 million."

One thing that I did not know: the infamous Trump call to Raffensperger? Said call "...was played for the court. While the call is infamous for containing Trump’s request that Raffensperger “find” him the votes necessary to win Georgia, what’s less known is that Trump referenced Freeman 18 times during the conversation. The former president called Freeman a “professional vote scammer,” and accused her of being a “known political operative” who had “stuffed the ballot boxes.” Freeman and Moss’ attorneys pointed out that Trump’s language in the call about Freeman echoed strategic post-election messaging crafted by Giuliani’s team."

WOW.

It'll be some time before they get the money, and I expect the amount will be reduced, but still - to have your life ruined by the Trump operation, they deserve it.

Politics should not work like this, destroying innocent people.

*facepalm*

What we have here is Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is under Federal investigation for numerous abuses of office, either unable to understand the statistics behind drug studies - which are complex - or not caring and just wanting to drum up some attention for himself. He's suing Pfizer for $10mil because the pandemic didn't end as soon as the vaccine came out.

Now, the fact that the Texas government is run by Republicans, and as a rule Republicans poo-poohed the precautions of masking, getting vaccinated, social distancing, etc. to reduce the spread of the virus - that surely has nothing to do with the fact that the disease continued to spread and kill.

I'm thinking that Pfizer has more than a large enough war chest, not to mention willingness to make Paxton look like a complete idiot in a court room.

AND COSMIC JUSTICE!

The robocalls targets black zip codes in cities with large black populations, with a black voice actress reading the following script:

Hi, this is Tamika Taylor from Project 1599, the civil rights organization founded by Jack Burkman and Jacob Wohl. Mail-in voting sounds great, but did you know that if you vote by mail, your personal information will be part of a public database that will be used by police departments to track down old warrants and be used by credit card companies to collect outstanding debts? The CDC is even pushing to use records for mail-in voting to track people for mandatory vaccines. Don't be finessed into giving your private information to the man, stay safe and beware of vote by mail.

The robocalls violated several calls because they targeted cell phones and went up against anti-KKK laws. And the people behind them got nailed bigly.

But here's the best part. As a part of their supervised community service - they "...were ordered to work 500 hours of community service." The ordered community service consisted of registering voters in minority and low-income communities, the FCC said."

Oh, the irony! And the glee!

If you are a compensated blogger, you would have to register with the state within five days of your first post or face a possible $25/day fine. This applies more to paid bloggers with active posting and following and excludes news web sites.

The law also requires political bloggers writing about Florida to file monthly reports reporting their income from blogging.

Talk about gross First Amendment overreach! Now, this is just a bill filed in the legislature, a proposal. It may never see consideration, or it may sweep through. But the thing that gets me is the Republicans keep calling Democrats snow flakes and such, here they are the ones being incredibly thin-skinned.

Time for me to create a Ron DeSantis tag and post more about him!

I do so love irony.

The Supreme Court said a high school football coach could freely exercise his religion immediately after a game, when he has a captive audience, and pray to Christ. This guy wants to lead a Satanic prayer, I'm not quite sure what that is, at the 50 yard line - and will allow people plenty of time to leave. The comments to the article are great!

What is sauce for the goose is also sauce for the gander. Ramen! He's much like the people who run the Church of Satan, flipping political hypocrisy back on its head. More of this needs to be done. I really would like to see him challenged and it taken to the Supreme Court and their noses to be rubbed into it, but they would probably refuse to hear it and just remand it back to the lower level.

“Now, what I want is Facts. Teach these boys and girls nothing but Facts. Facts alone are wanted in life. Plant nothing else, and root out everything else. You can only form the minds of reasoning animals upon Facts; nothing else will ever be of any service to them.”

There's also one about "Lies, damned lies, and statistics".

And then there's the Trump Train.

In my state - actually he's a County Commissioner somehow, we have Couy! Couy founded a group called Cowboys For Trump, which he created as a non-profit but it was investigated and declared to be a lobbying group and had to pay taxes and file paperwork accordingly and retroactively fined. He appealed but it was a lost cause.

And then Couy was captured on video and photographs at the January 6 freedom Lover's Capital Lynching Rehearsal Barbecue last year. And he was banned from setting foot in the Mescalero Apache Reservation, which is a part of Otero County for his participation in said event. He recently was convicted of his participation and sentenced to time served, a $3,000 fine (IIRC), and pretty hefty amount of community service. He loudly announced that he was going to take guns to DC and was shown on video loading (IIRC) a rifle, shotgun, and revolver - standard cowboy gear - into his car as he left for DC. Fortunately he left them at a friend's house before he crossed into the jurisdiction or he would have been arrested for additional violations and lost some very expensive pieces.

We had our primary election a couple of weeks ago, my wife worked at our local polling place. And the three member Otero County Commission initially refused to certify the election.

Here's Couy on the election. I don't know if it's from the day after the election, when they decided not to certify the results, or from when the Commission finally decided to certify the election. I'm guessing the latter.
"My vote to remain a no isn't based on any evidence, it's not based on any facts, it's only based on my gut feeling and my own intuition, and that's all I need."
-- Couy Griffin, Otero NM County Commissioner, on refusing to certify results of June 7th primary despite lack of evidence of voting fraud

The Secretary of State threatened to sue them and have them arrested. Monday they buckled when threatened with jail and in a two to one vote they approved the results so preparation for the November general election could go ahead.

And here's a lovely one from Rudy:
"We've got lots of theories, we just don't have the evidence."
-- Rudy Giuliani, urging AZ state Speaker of the House Rusty Bowers (R) to help overturn 2020 election results

Teach them facts! And it won't make a bit of difference as they will make up their own fictions to justify their own existence. Let's just ignore the fact that around 90-95% of the cases they put up in court they had to withdraw because they couldn't present any evidence showing valid claims.

I have a lot of theories, too, about Donald Trump, Rudy, and all of his family and cronies. Most of them are not fit for polite company.

This was posted a couple of days ago by John Scalzi. I'm going to quote the beginning of it then link to the rest. It does a good job of explaining a lot of the divisiveness in the USA.

* * * * *

I have a theory about the Republican Party, and it is that around the time Newt Gingrich became the head of its brain trust, the GOP added a fourth functioning principle to its previous tripod of “Southern Strategy to corner the racist vote,” “Abortion to corner the Evangelical vote” and “Tax cuts to corner the capitalist vote (and money).” The fourth principle was not about kettling and controlling a voting bloc, but rather a principle to maximize its power and to motivate the voting blocs beyond whatever the GOP could offer them politically.

That fourth principle, to put it in its shortest and bluntest form, is:

“But what if we… didn’t?”

Somewhat more broadly, the Republicans recognized there was a suite of political conventions and traditions that were designed to make it easier for things to get done, and that this suite of conventions and traditions were exploitable by denial. While people in both parties (and the parties themselves) would occasionally use this exploit, it was not done systematically.

That is, until Gingrich saw that practice as a weakness to be attacked. Here’s an early version:

“Treat the members of the other political party as colleagues rather than bitter enemies? Okay, but what if we… didn’t?“

Five dead. One invader shot while breaking in, three dead from other causes - one I'll talk about shortly. And one capitol police officer bludgeoned to death by an invader wielding a fire extinguisher. Stay classy, guys!

The self-own was an amazing Darwin Award, no idea if he took himself out of the gene pool before having kids. Apparently his social media feed had a photo of himself in a manly pose with two assault rifles with a caption along the lines of "Let's go get 'em!" Well, apparently he wanted to steal a painting, except he needed both hands to wrestle it off the wall and he was carrying a taser or a stun gun. So what would any true patriot do? He shoved it down his pants! And in the process of trying to wrangle the painting off the wall, the device discharged into his testicles, and it resulted in a fatal heart attack.

You cannot say the man didn't have balls.

The woman who was shot was a military veteran who served tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. She swore an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution. She later became a massive QAnon believer and apparently decided that her oath to the Constitution became superseded to a wild fantasy with zero evidence behind it.

And if you believe there is evidence that the election was stolen or rigged, read on. I have words for that upcoming.

Our Beloved Leader, the Cheeto Benito, got himself permabanned from Twitter. I expected that to take about two weeks after the 20th, or some time around early February. But that was before this week. His personal account was already under suspension for inciting violence related to the invasion of Congress, after the suspension was lifted he tweeted that he would not be attending the inauguration of President-elect Joseph Biden. And Twitter permabanned his personal account.

Seems innocuous enough on the surface. Then my wife said that it could be viewed as a dogwhistle to his followers that "Hey, I'm not going to be there! Go the inauguration, bring your rifles! Have fun!"

Then last night he twice tried to tweet bile from the POTUS account. And they were immediately scrubbed. So Twitter has a team monitoring that account 24/7.

Then later or this morning he tried to tweet the same bile, including election fraud crap from his campaign Twitter account. And now that account is permabanned. Seems that Twitter has an policy for avoiding bans.... Whoulda thunk.

Anyone else you want permabanned, Donny? How about Giuliani? Or your kids? Please! Post on all your kids Twitter accounts!

Other Twitter permabans? Sidney Powell and Michael Flynn. Both posted tweets about election fraud. And Sidney has another problem: Dominion Voting Systems has sued her for $1.3 BILLION for defamation, and they won't take a settlement: they're going to push for discovery, and force her to reveal all documents that she alleged their machines were rigged to flip votes from Trump to Biden.

Donny's Facebook account is suspended until at least after the inauguration, as is Instagram. And, of course, on January 20th at noon the POTUS Twitter account becomes Joe Biden's. There's a dispute whether or not it will be wiped of followers. It was not wiped of Obama's followers when it was given to Trump, and now Twitter is saying it will be wiped when given to Biden.

Now Donny is saying that he's going to create an Even Better Version of Twitter. I'm sure it's going to be just as good as his health care plan. When did he reveal that? It was four years ago, wasn't it? I'm having problems remembering the details of it. Funny, I don't remember my premiums going down or my coverages going up. Well, I am a bit older now. And Donny is such a genius, he knows computers better than anyone! Though there was that health care setback: "Who knew health insurance was so complicated?" I, for one, didn't know computer programming was so complicated. Except that I've been doing it since the 1980s.

And while Congress was under siege, Governor Mansions in several states were attacked. In Washington, invaders - let's call them what they are - forced the locked gates open and rushed the residence where the governor and his family were - one person in the crowd was described as carrying a long arm, i.e rifle or shotgun. They did not gain admittance to the residence. On guard at the gate WAS A CADET. When BLM was protesting in Seattle, THERE WAS A RIOT SQUAD ON DETAIL AT THE MANSION. Not so on Wednesday.

The New Mexico Governor's Mansion was likewise assaulted. As far as I know, there were no injuries to the Duly-elected Politicians or their families in any of these attacks.

I believe the number of states where such assaults were attempted was 10-12 or so.

THIS. WAS. AN. ATTEMPTED. COUP.

It was timed to coincide with the certification of the electoral college votes.

They had pre-printed shirts that rifted on the Marvel Cinematic Universe Civil War shirt that said "MAGA Civil War" with the date 01/06/2020 printed on it.

All of this was coordinated through alternative social media sites like Parler, which has now been banned from the Google store and is on notice from Apple.

So Donny's coup failed. The question is, does he have something else up his sleeve? We shall find out.

Currently, there is a massive call to invoke the 25th Amendment on him and temporarily remove him from power as POTUS and put Mike Pence, that paragon of steadfastness, courage, and integrity in as Acting President until after Biden is sworn in. Unlikely to happen as Pence has stated he's not in favor of it and it requires Cabinet secretaries to vote for it, and they're resigning, trying to distance themselves from being for or against such an act to avoid Donny's ire.

Donny is likely to get impeached next week. So he'll be historic in yet another way: the only President to be impeached twice! I doubt a trial can be held in the Senate before the 20th when Biden is sworn in, especially with Pence being the tie-breaking vote. And even after the 20th, can Republican Senators, with so many of them backing the challenge of House Representatives to dispute the electoral college vote certification, grow enough backbone to remove Donny? A two-thirds vote is requited to convict, and with a 50/50 split, not very bloody likely.

But interestingly, apparently the trial can be invoked or continue past Donny's term of office! AND most interestingly, they can strip him of his pension, his travel allowance, his perpetual health care, AND HIS SECRET SERVICE PROTECTIVE DETAIL!

Potentially very interesting results.

Now, was the election rigged?

Okay. You come to me with many buckets of money and say "Wayne, rig the election. We want Biden to beat Trump!"

So I rig the election. And Biden wins.

Now, if you paid me to rig this election and ONLY Biden wins, and I go to all the work to rig SO DAMN MANY elections - think about how many precincts in how many cities that I'd have to rig - to make it so Biden wins WITHOUT getting 98% of the vote, and I didn't rig it so that MORE OF THE DOWN-BALLOT DEMOCRATS DIDN'T WIN? Look, Pelosi has what, an ELEVEN SEAT MARGIN in the House? The Senate is now split 50/50 with the Vice-President, as her role President of the Senate passing deciding votes in the event of ties.

You would want either your money back or a bunch of goons to lay a severe beat-down on me for doing a pretty inept job of rigging the election!

Most of the time when the opposing party takes the Presidency, they also take the House and Senate, for at least the first two years, with a reasonable margin. It's not an absolute rule. And this gives them a chance to get their agenda going, at least until the mid-term elections two years in. Then there's no telling what happens in the House and Senate.

But that didn't happen this time. Dems lost a lot of seats in the House, and two seats in the Senate were toss-ups until a run-off election was held just this week and historically, both flipped from Republican to Democrat and the Senate went from Senate Majority Leader "Moscow" Mitch McConnel to a 50/50 split. No "Blue Wave", I had zero confidence that it was going to happen.

IF THE ELECTION WAS RIGGED, WHY WEREN'T MORE DOWN-BALLOT RACES WON BY DEMOCRATS?. Please, if you firmly believe the election was rigged, explain that to me, either in a reply or a private message.

50-60 legal suits for various reasons challenging results were filed by attorneys hired by Donny. They screamed that they had incredible evidence of election fraud that they were going to present in court! And EVERY TIME they got before the judge, the judge would say "Do you have evidence to support your claim?" the attorney would say "No, your Honor." "Case dismissed", bang goes the gavel.

A lawyer can say whatever they want in public and on TV and online. And they're being paid (hopefully!) by Donny's campaign. So they'll parrot Donny's lies to please the client. But it's a different game inside that room when someone says "All rise! The Honorable Judge So-And-So Presiding. Court is in session." Attorneys are Officers of the Court, and they take a vow that they will always tell the truth While Court Is In Session. If they lie, they can PERMANENTLY lose their status as an attorney to appear on court. They take that quite seriously, so with one exception, they have folded every time they've appeared in court with one of Donny's bullshit claims.

The one suit that was upheld? They wanted a vote inspector/monitor/whatever to be able to stand closer to someone processing ballots. Upheld. Yay, good for them.

Look. Most of the Secretaries of State were Republicans. All of them have integrity and want the election to be fair and the count to be accurate. THEY RAN THE ELECTION PROPERLY. Was there fraud? Probably a little, there always is. But not enough to flip the election around. If there was, then you have to re-run it for Every. Single. Race. That includes every senator. Every representative. State and local. Every city council person and mayor. Every ballot initiative. Every proverbial dog catcher. Do we still have dog catcher races?

If one race was fixed, then ALL of them were tainted. You can't rerun JUST the presidential race. That means you might end up with a vastly different mix in the House and Senate, especially after the shit that went down Wednesday. Maybe the Dems would get two-third majorities in both the House and Senate. That could mean Statehood for the District of Columbia, expansion of the Supreme Court, Constitutional Amendments, all sorts of stuff.

The ballots were counted. And recounted. And recounted AGAIN. AND AGAIN.

THE COUNTS WERE ACCURATE. DONALD TRUMP LOST THE ELECTION. JOSEPH BIDEN WON. HALF THE COUNTRY DIDN'T LIKE IT WHEN HILLARY CLINTON LOST IN '15, I DON'T RECALL THE CAPITOL BEING INVADED BACK THEN.

And no, I'm not a registered Democrat, never have been. And no, I don't necessarily advocate some of the things in the preceding paragraph.

I don't know what's going to go down in the next eleven days, or after Biden is sworn in. I am confident that the election was fairly run: the fact that so many seats were lost in the House, by itself, is sufficient evidence for me. Occam's razor. I'm sure Donny has something else planned, but deprived of his social media bullhorn, it's going to be very tough to spring it. And now the DC area is going to be very prepared to defend the inauguration on the 20th, so I expect it to go smoothly and without interruption.

It will definitely be interesting to see what proceedings are brought against our current Self-Disgracing President over the next eleven days.

"The Senate is not going to be bullied into rushing out more borrowed money into the hands of Democrats' rich friends who don't need the help."
-- Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, on why he blocked $2,000 stimulus checks

He didn't have a problem passing Trump's tax cuts for the rich, which added a trillion dollars to the deficit in one swell foop. But now that a Dem is going to be POTUS, it's time to flip the switch and start complaining about the budget and deficit financing. That stuff is only okay when the Republicans are in charge of the country.

I cannot wait for him to be out of office. He's done pretty much nothing for the last four years and especially the last two except rush mostly unqualified judge appointments through and hold a mock impeachment trial.
thewayne: (Default)
Here's the thing. It is not possible to declare X or Y won RIGHT NOW, because of the huge voter turnout. It looks like this is the largest voter turnout of any election, possibly in history. The early voting by itself pretty much exceeded all votes cast in the 2016 election.

And pretty much none of those votes have been tallied.

Regardless of what President Whiny Butt wants, they're not going to stop counting ballots tonight. State law doesn't permit it. Every vote has to be counted. And that includes mailed ballots.

What we're seeing right now is the people who voted TODAY, and I'm thinking that those were probably mostly his partizans. The numbers are going to change as the mailed votes and early votes are processed, and it is still possible for a Democratic tsunami to sweep him out of office.

Or not.

We don't know.

The states have a couple of weeks, IIRC, to certify their election counts. And I'm sure both sides will have all sorts of lawyers fighting for their candidates.

And that's not the end of it.

Our Presidential election consists of three stages. This is the first stage. The people vote, the States certify the votes.

That's Stage 1.

But we're not actually voting for the President. We're voting for a slate of electors who go to the Electoral College, who meet in December.

THAT is where the actual decision is made.

You keep hearing about 269? I think that's the number, at least. That's the number of electoral college votes required to win the Presidency.
[EDIT: 269 is the number a candidate must EXCEED to win the Presidency.]

That's Stage 2.

THEN the results go to the United States Congress who review and certify the results. Only at that point is it official. It's pretty much pro forma as once the Electoral College is final, the new President starts picking out wallpaper and finding out if moving vans are available around January 20th or thereabouts.

It's a complicated process. A lot of people want to eliminate the Electoral College: George W. Bush, like Donald Trump, lost the popular vote but managed to win the EC. They want a straight-up popular vote to decide the Presidency. Myself, I'm not sure where I fall on that decision. We have a huge disproportionate amount of electoral power wielded some of the huge states: California, Texas, Florida, New York. It makes some of the small states, such as my own New Mexico, feel kinda slighted. And likewise, there are Conservatives in California and Liberals in Texas who feel equally without voice.

Personally, I think ranked choice voting in every state and proportionate distribution of electors - and bound electors that MUST vote according to how they are apportioned (unless something drastic happens, like the candidate they're apportioned to dies or resigns) would make the race much more interesting.

So yes, things look bleak right now. But the counting is going to take another week or so, and the picture WILL change. We don't know how.

But I do know one thing.

The screaming is going to get a lot louder. It's going to be a long month. And even if it is a Biden win, Trump is going to fight tooth and claw to try and keep the job, because there's a good chance that he'll be spending the rest of his life in state courts, if not prison, as soon as he's out of office.

[EDIT2: Check the Wikipedia page on the Electoral College. Heck of a lot of stuff there!]

Aside from the fly parking itself on Pence's head.

They showed a clip of Trump saying that "All American's" could get the exact same treatment that he got at Walter Reed. And IIRC, he said it would be free.

Let's check that.

Remdesevir. His administration let them get an exclusive on that, and I believe that treatment is now over $10,000 a shot.

The monoclonal antibodies that he got? Is still in trials and only nine people have otherwise gotten the emergency authorization for it. It is very effective, but monoclonal treatments are very expensive. And here's the best part: it's made from stem cells, so it shouldn't be available to any Republican that is against stem cell research.

And the free part? I expect our medical insurance might have a differing opinion on that.

Yeah. Sure.

There was one very big takeaway from the debates, but this has been developing for the entire time Trump has been in office, and that is the Republican desire to destroy the Affordable Care Act and eliminate coverage of pre-existing conditions. Trump has been promising since day 1 that "We're going to replace it with something EVEN BETTER AND CHEAPER!" But nothing has ever been proposed. IT. IS. AN. EMPTY. PROMISE. Which isn't in the least bit surprising. But let's leave that aside. After all, who knew that health care reform was so complicated?

Last week? Maybe the week before, Trump signed an executive order or two saying that he was ordering continued coverage of pre-existing medical conditions. Here's the thing. That does not mean shit. There is no legislation behind it. There is no legislative proposal behind it. It is a completely empty, meaningless gesture. Zero substance. Much like many things that I could compare it to, but I won't.

Meanwhile, the Administration is about to appear before the Supreme Court to try to get the remaining pieces of the Affordable Care Act declared invalid, which will truly destroy coverage of pre-existing conditions.

Do you know who has pre-existing conditions? President Trump. He contracted something called the Novel Coronavirus. So did 7.5 MILLION AMERICANS, of which TWO HUNDRED AND TEN THOUSAND OF THEM HAVE DIED. Well, I guess that last cohort don't have to worry about medical insurance. But those 7,500,000 do. And they're in serious danger of losing it. Not that Typhoid Donald will ever lose his health coverage - he'll have the best in American health protection for the rest of his *life, insert preferred adjective as desired.

The people who will lose their coverage?

People who are diabetic.

Or have high blood pressure.

Or asthma.

Or successfully fought off cancer. Had a heart attack or stroke?

Or who have immune disorders, primary or acquired.

Or any number of other conditions that I can't name, but guaranteed there are lists of.

Congratulations. You're going to die for the DOW.

Ronald Reagan asked that in 1980 and that was part of what fueled his win over Jimmy Carter. Writer John Scalzi writes an interesting analysis of where he stands today, compared to four years ago.

* * * * *

https://whatever.scalzi.com/2020/09/16/the-reagan-test-and-donald-trump/

In 1980, which is now — Jesus — 40 years ago, Ronald Reagan asked a question of the American people: “Are you better off today than you were four years ago?” Reagan asked this question because he was running for president against Jimmy Carter, and it was in his interest to make the election a referendum on the incumbent. And while it would be inaccurate to say the question won Reagan the White House, it is accurate to say the question was a particularly useful framing device for Reagan: It took the election campaign and set it on personal terms for every voter, in a way they could easily quantify and apply to their own lives.

Now it’s 2020, and Donald Trump is president and running for re-election, and aside from any over-arching political issues with, or my own personal opinion of, the man, I think it will be interesting and useful to apply Reagan’s question to my own personal life: am I, in fact, better off today than I was four years ago?

Well, let’s see.

My income has been stable for the last four years, thanks mainly to contracts signed more than four years ago. Like the economy at large (until the coronavirus struck, at least), my generally robust economic condition was a continuation of Obama-era practices and strategies, rather than new conditions. Likewise my investments have done fine: more or less on the same path as they were four years prior, minus of course that significant divot earlier in the year. The government has propped up the stock market during the current economic blowout, and there will probably be a reckoning for that, but that’ll be later, not today. I hope Future Scalzi has figured that one out. For Present Scalzi, it’s fine.

Four years ago I paid higher income taxes. In my real-world experience this doesn’t mean I’m better off; the marginal utility to me of the money that no longer goes to taxes is relatively small, and meanwhile the national deficit has skyrocketed, which will almost certainly have significant economic and quality of life issues later on. But that’s another economic problem for future Scalzi, I guess. Today Scalzi is no worse off because of the tax cuts.

Oh, and my local internet provider finally upgraded my internet speeds.

So, those are the positives! Now, let’s see about everything else, involving me on a more or less personal level:

Four years ago, I could leave my house without wearing a mask (I mean, I guess I could leave the house without one, if I was an asshole who didn’t care about the health and safety of others as well as myself, but I’m not, so I wear a mask).

Four years ago I could go to a restaurant or see a movie or go to a party or get on a plane without worrying about possibly contracting a disease that could put me on a respirator, kill me or give me serious, chronic, long-term health issues.

Four years ago I didn’t worry about sending my kid to school.

Four years ago I didn’t have family and friends who had to choose between exposing themselves to a disease that could kill or seriously debilitate them, or being able to pay rent or buy medications.

Four years ago I had a federal government that actually had a well-thought out plan for dealing with highly-infectious, potentially pandemic-level diseases like the one we’re currently living through.

Four years ago I could trust the information from the CDC (and NOAA, while we’re at it) to represent the best available scientific information, not the information that was deemed the least damaging to the president, according to political apparatchiks installed into those organizations by the White House.

Four years ago I didn’t have a president who lied about the severity of a pandemic to the public while privately acknowledging that severity.

Four years ago tens of thousands of people more than there should have been weren’t dead, and even more sick, of a disease that they might have avoided if accurate information and a well-formulated plan had been offered at the federal level. These numbers include people I know and care about.

Four years ago there were far more countries I could travel to with an American passport than ones I could not, including the one directly north of us.

Four years ago, I could go to conventions and have book tours to promote my work and to make connections with business associates.

Four years ago I could get nearly any kind of soda I wanted in an aluminum can.

Four years ago there were no shortages of basic home necessities.

Four years ago I did not have a president who championed white supremacy and conspiracy theories over science and the well-being of all Americans.

Four years ago I didn’t worry whether my vote, or the votes of family members and friends, would be counted fairly and accurately.

Four years ago my health insurance cost less and covered more.

Four years ago I didn’t think about whether my mail would be sent or arrive in a timely manner.

Four years ago I had a president who hadn’t insulted the work and sacrifice of service members, who include both friends and family members.

Four years ago I didn’t worry whether my access to the services and function of the federal government, in an emergency or at all other times, would be contingent upon whether the president had decided someone in my state state was his friend or his foe, or had flattered him enough that he felt inclined to do the job that he was in fact required to do, by law and by the Constitution.

So, no. I’m not better off today than I was four years ago. I am in fact rather worse off: I have a little bit more money, at the expense of an actual, functioning country and society. This is not a good exchange. I will vote accordingly.

Who is better off today than they were four years ago? The ultra-rich, grifters and white supremacists (there are no small overlaps amongst those circles), although since the latter group also highly correlates with people who don’t wear masks in public, possibly not even them for long.

Now, the card that Reagan was palming 40 years ago was that not everything that was bad then was the fault of the president; likewise, not everything that is bad today is the fault of Trump. He is not responsible for COVID-19, for example. What he is responsible for is his and his administration’s response to it, and the effects that response has had on the lives of the American people. Likewise his and his adminstration’s choices at various junctures over the last four years, when it had the choice to make people’s lives better, and didn’t, unless they were ultra-rich, grifters, or white supremacists. That’s more than enough, in this case, for Trump to have made things worse than they were, four years ago.

So, again, no. Trump fails the Reagan Test for me. For that among so many other reasons, he doesn’t deserve a second term. I am well aware that there are millions of people who are worse off than I am after four years, who will still be voting for Trump. I would suggest they have not honestly answered for themselves the question Reagan asked Americans forty years ago. Perhaps they should, before they cast their vote.

This is a rumor. This is only a rumor. In the event of an actual announcement....

So the father-in-law of Dominic Cummings, one of BoJo's cabinet, told a reporter that BoJo came back to work after having a very serious run-in with COVID far too soon, and that he's entirely not fit. The problem was, Boris was literally in a damned if you do, damned if you don't position. He either had to get back to work, or resign. If he resigned, he would throw the UK into even more chaos regarding COVID and Brexit than it was already in. If he didn't, he risked wrecking his own health further.

He chose the latter course. And apparently he's paying the price.

And now it's rumored that some time after the first of the year that he's going to resign as Prime Minister. Date unspecified, I guess it depends on how long he can hold out, and possibly how much chaos it looks like Brexit is going to be, the answer to that is MASSIVE.

So a No Deal Brexit is going to happen at the end of the year, shit is going to break all over the UK, the Torries are going to be scrambling to try to patch things up, the Remainers are going to be cringing, the Leavers are going to be shouting "We Won!(?)" and then wondering why the supermarkets are empty and they can't get their prescriptions, and the Europeans are going to be shaking their heads. And probably Nicola Sturgeon and Scotland are going to start preparing a Leave UK/Join EU vote.

It's possible that the UK still might get some deals settled with the EU, but from what I've been reading, it doesn't seem likely. They're still wanting Most Favored status, but entirely on their own terms and with no equal responsibilities, and the EU won't budge, and why should they? England is the one who left the organization, and negotiating is a two-way process. If all you're going to do is demand everything your way, there's little reason for the other side - whom you're very dependent on - to acquiesce.

BoJo's gov't hasn't even been able to strike meaningful deals with America's negotiators! Trade negotiations are a fundamental aspect of government, and the Torries haven't seem to have had much success in that area.

I don't deeply follow UK politics, do any Torries have the following to pick up the pieces and try to follow through on Brexit if BoJo resigns or dies?

There's an interesting series of photos of U.S. Presidents, at the start and end of their presidencies, showing how much of a toll their terms take on them as it's an insanely stressful job. Of course I think that starts after Lincoln. I have no idea if they have a similar series for PMs, I would imagine it would show similar changes.

A Dork Tower from almost twenty years ago does a really nice job of summarizing how many people from a certain political party seem to think. Unfortunately the site seems to block direct links to images, so here's a link to the page.

"You can go to live in France, but you cannot become a Frenchman. You can go to live in Germany or Turkey or Japan, but you cannot become a German, a Turk, or Japanese. But anyone, from any corner of the earth, can come to live in America and become an American...Other countries may seek to compete with us; but in one vital area, as a beacon of freedom and opportunity that draws the people of the world, no country on earth comes close. This, I believe, is one of the most important sources of America's greatness. We lead the world because, unique among nations, we draw our people, our strength, from every country and corner of the world. And by doing so we continuously renew and enrich our nation."
-- Ronald Reagan, in his final speech as president

In retrospect, I disagreed with much that Reagan did, but I was quite a political naif at the time and have changed a lot since those years. Still, quite a thing that he said then.

I'll bet McConnell and the resident of 1600 are looking for IV Excedrin.

Jones beat Moore by 20,000 votes, 49.9% vs 48.4%, with 100% of precincts reporting. AP called it 2 hours after the polls closed.

HOWEVER, according to 538, "Jones gave a victory speech. But, the Moore campaign is apparently not conceding this race, hoping that when military, provisional and write-in ballots are counted, the vote will be within 0.5 percentage points, triggering an automatic statewide recount. At this point, an automatic recount seems highly unlikely (barring something truly unforeseen, of course). The Moore campaign could pay for a recount itself, however."

Is anyone surprised? But a spread of 1.5% is unlikely to be closed by those add-ins, and a recount is unlikely to be triggered.

It's going to make things much more interesting in the Senate, especially with the tax bill probably going to require a re-vote in the near future.

And I put it in quotes because they're the ones who claim the loudest that that is what they are, rather than letting us see it in them for ourselves and to be inspired by it. You know, sort of like how Jesus told his people to behave.

The Beatitudes are part of the Sermon on the Mount, and appear in slightly different form in Matthew and Luke. Luke also adds four Woes. They're really simple computer programming or logic concepts: if this, then that. The thing that has me riled is a comment by [livejournal.com profile] kimuro in reply to a post by [livejournal.com profile] e_moon60's blog where she describes asking a Christian about The Beatitudes, and being told that those only apply AFTER they are in heaven (it is not Kimurho's comment, Kimurho is describing a FB incident with a self-identified Christian). WHAT THE [expletive deleted] IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN?!

From Wikipedia, also available from Project Gutenberg or any online or offline bible that you like:

The eight Beatitudes in Matthew 5:3–12 during the Sermon on the Mount.

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven. (Matthew 5:3)
Blessed are those who mourn: for they will be comforted. (5:4)
Blessed are the meek: for they will inherit the earth. (5:5)
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness: for they will be filled. (5:6)
Blessed are the merciful: for they will be shown mercy. (5:7)
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they will see God. (5:8)
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they will be called children of God. (5:9)
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (5:10)

In verses 5:11-12, the eight Beatitudes are followed by what is often viewed as a commentary—a further clarification of the eighth one with specific application being made to the disciples. Instead of using the third-person plural "they", Jesus changes to second-person "you":

Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

R. T. France considers verses 11 and 12 to be based on Isaiah 51:7.

The Beatitudes unique to Matthew are the meek, the merciful, the pure of heart, and the peacemakers. The other four have similar entries in Luke, but are followed almost immediately by "four woes".

Luke

The four Beatitudes in Luke 6:20–22 are set within the Sermon on the Plain. Verse 20 introduces them by saying, "and he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said"

Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.
Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled.
Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.
Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.

Luke 6:23 ("Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.") appears to parallel the text in Matthew 5:11-12, which reads, "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you".

The four woes that follow in Luke 6:24–26

Woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort.
Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry.
Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.
Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.
(emphasis by TheWayne)

The fourth "woe" in verse 26 may be parallel to the commentary in Matthew 5:11-12. These woes are distinct from the Seven Woes of the Pharisees which appear later in Luke 11:37-54.

I had forgot about the Woes.

Christianity has some basic truths, such as:
Treat others the way that you would like to be treated. Sadomasochists need not apply.
Be good to other people: help out the needy, and don't expect reward.
Conversely, apply Wheaton's Law: Don't Be A Dick.
Be an example of what a good person is, but don't advertise your faith.

Let's distil those down a bit further:
Do good. Do not do bad. If you don't get rewarded for doing good, it happens, don't sweat the little stuff.

CHRISTIANS ARE SUPPOSED TO HELP PEOPLE. DENYING THEM HEALTH CARE, DENYING THEM A LIVING WAGE, MASS INCARCERATION: in the words of Yoda, These do not a Christian make.

Let's add some more Matthew, this from chapter 25:
https://www.bible.com/en-GB/bible/206/mat.25

(34)Then the King will tell those on his right hand, ‘Come, blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; (35)for I was hungry, and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty, and you gave me drink. I was a stranger, and you took me in. (36)I was naked, and you clothed me. I was sick, and you visited me. I was in prison, and you came to me.’

(37) “Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, and feed you; or thirsty, and give you a drink? (38)When did we see you as a stranger, and take you in; or naked, and clothe you? (39)When did we see you sick, or in prison, and come to you?’

(40)“The King will answer them, ‘Most certainly I tell you, because you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

(41)Then he will say also to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels; (42)for I was hungry, and you didn’t give me food to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink; (43)I was a stranger, and you didn’t take me in; naked, and you didn’t clothe me; sick, and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’

(44) “Then they will also answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and didn’t help you?’

(45) “Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Most certainly I tell you, because you didn’t do it to one of the least of these, you didn’t do it to me.’ (46)These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” Again, emphasis mine.

*sigh* I wish I could find a rock that I could crawl under for the next many years.

Another comment to Elizabeth Moon's post talked about how in the USA you supposedly have separation of church and state, yet politicians feel it is required to talk loudly about their Christianity, while in England they do not have separation of church and state and it's considered rude for their politicians to talk publicly about their religion.

Obviously a majority of non-UK citizens can't be as well-informed on the Brexit issues as a Brit, assuming Brits tried to educate themselves on it, still I'm surprised at the vote. Well, maybe I'm not surprised. After all, we're the country where Donald Trump has a decent chance of becoming leader of the free world.

I personally don't think the Brexit is a good idea. I think the UK had an excellent approach of keeping the Pound and not adopting the Euro: I think the unified currency was a really bad idea, as Greece, Spain, etc. have demonstrated.

We all live in Interesting Times, I guess. I have a theory that every country occasionally goes insane. I think the USA is well in to moving in to such a time where we have people voting against their interests in the name of party ideology where the political parties don't give squat about the people who vote for them, perhaps the UK is entering a similar stage.

Trump is symbolic of only part of the problem. The reality is that greed has overcome helping your fellow man and doing good. It seems that most companies' sole purpose is providing increasing dividends to their top investors, the rest can go hang.

There's some interesting discussion on Slashdot about the result of yesterday's Brexit vote, only time will tell what happens in the long-run.

In the end, it's too depressing to think about. And ultimately, we're all dead anyway.
