It's definitely on sale on the Apple ebook store and Kindle store, search for Lord of the Rings One Volume. Since these two platforms are featuring it, other platforms may also.

Can't guarantee how long 'today' will last, I received the news letter at 7:50am MST.

It has all the appendices, so it's a pretty good edition! While yes, reading paper is good, having an electronic edition for easy searching is also useful.

I'm not sure whether I saw this back in the day, but it's definitely worth watching again.

Very cool! I haven't been to Halls of the Dead or Helm's Deep, I've been everywhere else shown. Both are based entirely on the books. The game is 15 years old, add in some time to build it, and the game is forbidden from using material from the movies, so it's a lot more true to the books with some additional stuff like Goldilocks and the Killer Rabbit.

And you can play the game free... Right now we're having the Farmer's Festival, which is a lot of fun.

While buying my supporting membership for the Chicago WorldCon to get the Hugo downloads (don't seem to be available yet), for whatever reason I decided to read the In Memoriam page and came across this entry:

Priscilla Tolkien (b.1929) died on February 28. Tolkien was the youngest and last surviving child of J.R.R. Tolkien and has served as the honorary Vice President of the Tolkien Society. She served as a trustee for the Tolkien Trust.

Her entry in Wikipedia is a bit more informative. She was a probation officer and social worker and deeply involved in her father's work, serving as a typist at the age of fourteen. She also served to name Frodo, whose original name was Bingo Bolger-Baggins.

There are still some grandchildren and presumably some greats, nephews and nieces.

One thing mentioned in the Tolkien Family Wikipedia page that I had forgotten was that JRR was born in South Africa! I vaguely recalled that. I don't remember when he moved to England.

September 2022. The series will be set in the Second Age, long before the events of the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. They say there will be some familiar characters, which will most likely be Elrond, Galadriel, and who knows else.

Apparently they've finished principle shooting in New Zealand, now it's all post-production, VFX, editing, etc.

Estimated production cost? Over $450 million US. Rumored cost for the rights from the Tolkien estate? $250m. Lots of the rest surely went into long-term costs for set creation to be reused over five seasons that they're planning for the series. So the per-season cost isn't too hideous. If you squint. And turn your head sideways.

I'm not sure who's getting the money. JRR's direct heirs are all dead. Well, whoever it is got a pocketful.

The article lists the actors involved, of whom I only recognized one, though a couple of names rang faint bells. And there is one still image. I'd expect a trailer in 4-5 months to gin up interest.

You'll need an Amazon Prime TV subscription to watch it.

Amazon was developing a Middle Earth MMO game, but they pulled the plug on it earlier this year. Their game studio hasn't had a lot of luck of late. It was believed to be a parallel development to support this TV series. Rather a pity, a lot of people were really looking forward to seeing what it would be like.
